She became an overnight star when cast by Howard Hawks opposite Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not 1944. She and Bogart married 1945 and starred together in The Big Sleep 1946. She returned to Hollywood after an eight-year absence with Murder on the Orient Express 1974 and two years later appeared in The Shootist 1976, subsequently playing occasional cameo roles. She also appeared in The Cobweb 1955 and Harper 1966.
